I am a technical writer and editor with a broad range of organizational skills and academic knowledge useful in creating content. I have special interest in science and proposal writing. My long-term goal is to be employed as a medical technical writer. I am currently studying XML, XML-based languages such as AIML, and the XML data model DITA, as well as languages that can be used with XML, such as SQL.

NIU Coursework - Research Proposal - Leading Remote Writing Teams

This was a three part assignment for which I compiled a list of possible resources and then wrote an annotated bibliography. I had to review each source, summarize it, and explain how it could potentially be useful. As I did this I became more familiar with relevant terms, and not only did this make it easier to find further sources, but it also aided me later in understanding and discussing the topic. Then I narrowed down my subject and selected four sources to review for a literature review. For this part I had to figure out a way to layer and synthesize the sources into a coherent narrative. I had to figure out how disparate pieces of information from each source could be related and articulated together into a “big picture”. I found this part the most challenging, and I think it was good that I got to practice this skill. I had to identify a problem or question and potential solutions. Despite the struggle I had with this, or perhaps because of it, I think I did a good job synthesizing together disparate information from various sources into a coherent narrative that gave a broader picture of the situation and the dilemmas than any source alone, bringing forth a new perspective. As I worked on this I found myself further narrowing my topic. Although I carefully kept track of what information was from each source, I found the task of making sure all the in-text citations were put in properly to be tedious, and as a revision I had to reformat the works cited page to make it all consistent with APA. Finally, I built upon my findings and wrote a research proposal. For this I had to identify questions to ask and propose two experiments to find the answers. I had to describe the methodology and what I hoped to get out of it. One problem I encountered was retaining the formatting from the google document I had been working in when I downloaded it as a word document, particularly in the annotated bibliography and work cited sections. I found the online version of word I had did not allow me to add hanging indents. I didn’t really have much trouble with this part as it just involved adding two new, relatively simple sections once I figured out exactly what variables I wanted to study and how to go about it.

Professional Development Projects

This is where I will post projects completed for my own professional development. I am currently working on a standard operating procedure document for one of my wikis.
